LinkedIn gets an upgrade

Posted on 11:25 AM

LinkedIn is getting 8 new features added! These features are related to sharing links and articles. Some of these changes are similar to things happening on Facebook. One of the biggest changes centers around status updates. When you copy and paste links into the status update box and click "attach link", it will automatically pull and image and article excerpt.
You now also have the ability to edit and delete posts. You can share links with your connections and also decide which of your connections can see your statuses and which cannot.
With these changes, the creators hope to make LinkedIn hub for information-sharing.

'If You Have to Cry, Go Outside'

Posted on 12:39 PM

For any of you who watch Kell on Earth, you know this is one of Kelly Cutrone's famous lines. Vogue had an interview with her and discussed her book. She is one of the most well known women in PR and she just recently came out with a book of encouragement. It's called 'If You Have to Cry, Go Outside..and other things your mother never told you'. On her show she comes across to most people as a very rude and demanding woman but this book shows a different side of her. Her book is encouraging and it's filled with her life experiences to help young girls in the PR field. This book is now out on the shelves so if you're interested, make sure you pick one up!

The ABC television network was the first to offer an app to the iPad where users can stream TV episodes free of charge. This app has already been downloaded 205,000 times and users have already streamed 650,000 television episodes. Since as of last week 450,000 iPads have been sold, it appears as if 1 in every 2 owners has downloaded this app and is using it. The episode most in demand is Modern Family. This app is a huge hit for the users and company. Hopefully more networks will bring their content to the iPad as well.

Guest Speaker John Dawe

Posted on 10:19 AM

Totally D'awesome is the name of his website and it is hilarious! I think that's such a clever line. John Dawe was great in our social media class last week. He really held my attention and got me interested in what he does. I found the way he got the community involved in Judge Tina Polachek Gartley's campaign was amazing. She went from being unknown in the area to being voted judge through John Dawe's efforts. It's amazing how social media works and how fast it spreads the word. I was very interested in the way he found people to add as friends, the way he sent text messages to cell phones and the way he used video to show people her reaction when she was elected judge. I really enjoyed having John Dawe in class and he really helped me to see how important social media is.

Fashion Magazine looking for Interns!

Posted on 11:48 AM
As I was reading through Fashion magazine I came across a Tweet that said they're looking for interns in all of their departments. Applications are due April 15th if anyone is interested! The position is in Canada but it's over the summer if anyone wants to travel. Just go to this website and download the application.

Age Limit for Runway Models

Posted on 6:06 PM
Fashion designer, Michael Kors, has set an age limit for his models. He took part in a panel discussion called "Health Matters: Weight and Wellness in the World of Fashion". Michael Kors announced that he will only be hiring models 16 and older because "The age of models really has to become a priority. We need to give these girls a chance to grow up." He also said he won't hire girls who show any signs of an eating disorder. Reading this shocked me because when I see runway shows, the models in them are insanely thin. It will be really interesting to see what types of girls he hires. This might possibly change the world of modeling.

Mashable a big help!

Posted on 5:57 PM
I am following Mashable on Twitter and I'm loving it! All of the posts are super informative and even entertaining. The one I am ready now is just list of social media jobs that are posted and these Tweets are posted very often. Following Mashable is very useful for seniors or people who just want to learn more about social media. I also read another Tweet by them with a link called 6 Easy Ways to Score the Best Deals with Social Media and it's great! It talks about how to find coupons through Twitter to your favorite companies and how to find near-by deals. Mashable is a great company to follow!

Turn your old shoes into an athletic playground!

Posted on 7:55 PM

According to Fashion Magazine, Nike is taking anyone's old sneakers and using them to create athletic and playground surfaces. The sneakers don't have to be Nike but this drive is unfortunately only going on in Vancouver..but maybe someday it'll come around here! This program has existed since the early 90's and has recycled parts from more than 24 million pairs of shoes!! It takes about 2,500 pairs of shoes to make one basketball or tennis court.

Goodbye Vogue, Hello Fashion Magazine!

Posted on 7:50 PM
I can't seem to find any posts from Vogue anymore..I don't know if they stopped Tweeting or they deleted their account because I can't even get onto it anymore. So, I have moved onto Fashion Magazine :)

Guest Speaker in class =)

Posted on 1:29 PM
Christopher J. Hughes, a member on the staff at the Times Leader, came to talk to us in class. He was very interesting to listen to and also helpful. I really enjoyed learning about how the Times Leader and also the Weekender use Facebook and YouTube to promote themselves. Using things like their YouTube page for singers in the area is great. It helps get the community involved and helps to get new singers out there. He also helped in giving tips to students on what types of equipment they should have if they were interested in taking video for the news. I also really got a kick out of his story about the camera not working and him using his IPhone application to do an entire news feed. I really liked having him in class to switch things up a bit. It was very helpful and I enjoyed it.

Using Social Media in School

Posted on 1:25 PM
As social media is becoming more and more popular, the use of the networks in school is increasing. Just last semester for my PR class, Facebook and Twitter weren't even close to as important as they are now. I never thought to use those networks to get the word out for events. Now, in my PR class I am on the SEO part of our account team. I have already made a Facebook for the Polish Room and have already gotten a great response from it. We have 105 friends and most of those people were completely unaware that Wilkes University even had a Polish Room. It's useful because I post all upcoming events on the site and it helps raise awareness. I don't even think social media network are at their peak yet. I think they'll just continue to get better and better.

Vogue is nowhere to be found!

Posted on 1:11 PM

So as I was scrolling through Twitter, I realized that I saw no posts from the company I am following. I went back to last week and got tired of searching. So, for this blog I am going to write about the first company I chose, Fashion Magazine. They seem to always be updating their Twitter and they have been using it a lot recently for contests. The contests I have been seeing are to win make up kits but it still helps a lot with getting their name out there. Girls who see it will sign up for the contest and most likely end up looking around more on their website. They also do contests to win hair products as well. These help them to become more popular and it gets them a lot more hits on their website.

Spring Break Flew By!

Posted on 8:19 PM

Spring is on its way!!

I am sooo happy it's March already! I cannot wait until the weather starts getting nicer and summer gets even closer!

My spring beak flew by and I feel like I really didn't do much..I am not looking forward to class tomorrow but the sooner we start, the sooner we're out again for Easter Break!! :) :)

Over break I went to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D and I absolutely looooved it!..I could have done without the 3D but I loved the entire movie. It was so interesting. Tim Burton makes such odd movies and I though Alice in Wonderland was another one of those odd movies. The colors in the scenes were amazing and the make up and costumes were awesome. I thought it was a great movie!

Lily Allen Ditching Music

Posted on 8:59 AM
Lily Allen, a singer, is ditching music to go into the fashion industry. I haven't heard much of her music but according to Vogue's Twitter account, she is very popular in Britain where she is from. She is having her last music gig on March 7th and she will be done after that. She is opening a store with her sister because she says fashion is a new adventure for her. She also says music and fashion cannot exist without each other. Vogue is great with doing entries on mostly fashion but they also report on music and other things going on in the world.

Google Analytics and Contests

Posted on 1:19 PM
I really like that we had to put Google Analytics on our blog because it's really neat being able to keep track of how many viewers you have. Although it was complicated at first I finally got mine to work and saw that I already had some visitors. In class I really liked seeing how all the different companies have their own contests. Going onto the Dunkin Donuts one was really cool but made me crave donuts haha. The Bing contests were interesting too. It's so funny to me that people take the time to actually make those videos. I definitely wouldn't have voted for the guy who won though. Also, off the contest topic but the Biggest Freak Out Ever was absolutely hilarious!! I have never seen it before and I can't wait to show my family and friends how funny it is haha. I was reading some things on the internet about it though and people are saying it's fake. My favorite one though was the one where the brother is taping his brother freak out from upstairs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMTnOZI6mj0

Spring Fashion Guide 2010

Posted on 8:32 AM
Here's a link I found through Vogue that shows what's in for this spring! It's all quite pricey but it's exciting to see how trends change so quickly through out the seasons. Everything that's in is so coloful and full of flower prints. http://www.style.com/trendsshopping/shoppingguide/011910_Spring_Shopping_Guide/

Vogue not tweeting so much :(

Posted on 8:18 AM
I am very disappointed right now because as I am going through Twitter I'm not seeing much at all from the magazine I'm following! I switched from Fashion to Vogue because at first Fashion was rarely tweeting and now Fashion is filling up the whole page of tweets! I've been through a few pages so far and I have only seen about 3 tweets from Vogue so that's too bad. I guess each company goes through phases. Maybe once a few more things happen with Vogue they'll start having as many tweets as Fashion magazine does right now..I sure hope so! I hope I didn't switch to the wrong magazine :(

In-class exercise

Posted on 9:18 AM
I really enjoyed the in-class exercise we did two weeks ago where we got a company and had to decided what they should use their blog for. This exercise really helped me to see how helpful blogs really are for companies. My group had a pharmacy so we all decided that it would be a blog geared toward the community and it would post a lot of coupons for some of the products we sold. It would also announce new items we would be selling in the store as well. We all had different ideas and it helped me to see how we would all make very different blogs if we had to be in charge of one and it helped me to realize how many different things there really are that can be put into a blog. It was a really fun exercise.

Catching on to Twitter and Blogger :)

Posted on 2:49 PM
I am really enjoying following Vogue on Twitter and updating pictures and music on my blog. I love personalizing the blog especially. Vogue is really fun to follow though because they are constantly tweeting something. Especially since it's Fashion Week now, they are posting a lot of runway outfits from top designers. This is great for people like me to follow since I can't go to fashion week I can just get on Twitter and check out all the new clothing lines. Here are some pictures from the BCBG runway show. http://www.style.com/fashionshows/complete/S2009RTW-BCBG

Social Media

Posted on 7:43 PM
Learning about social media is really interesting to me. I always thought blogging was just writing a post and just having people look at it but there's so much you can add. I just found out how to add a playlist and I'm enjoying adding music to my page. I never realized how many companies use blog's and Twitter accounts. Social media really helps improve their businesses. I am excited to learn more in this class and improve my blogging skills.

1st Blog for Vogue USA on Twitter

Posted on 9:23 AM
I have been following Vogue USA on Twitter and they make posts very often. They post things about fashion, interviews with photographers, articles about models on the runway and even reviews on new products such as the iPad for Apple. They even post new fashion trends. I think their Twitter is great because people who don't buy Vogue can just keep up with them on their Twitter account.
